Yearly membership averages around 900 professionals from across the state as well as administrators, teachers, and others who realize the role a strong school library program plays in student academic success. One of its most successful programs is the South Carolina Book Awards program which allows K-12 students to read from a chosen list of books and vote for their favorite. In addition to an annual conference and a summer institute, the association also publishes a quarterly journal, SCASL Messenger, that highlights news, success stories, and timely articles of interest to school librarians. Overall, SCASL works to ensure that school library programs are integral to teaching and learning in every South Carolina school.
